Climate Action Laboratories

2811 creates climate action laboratories in Latin America and Africa

Statement / Como 2811 we collaborate and promote, together with universities, communities and activists, climate action laboratories in Latin America and Africa for climate change adaptation.

Young Climathon Linares

We have started this path by activating young Chileans through a “Young Climathon” in the city of Linares, Chile, in conjunction with the Climate-KIC Young Innovators program. Linares faces high levels of air pollution, desertification and an agricultural crisis. At the Young Climathon we connect the climate crisis with the fight for social justice that young people live in Chilean society. Here is a video summary of the day.

The Young Climathon convened more than 80 teachers and 100 students aged 12-19, and planted initial seeds of skills needed to meet the challenge of climate change. The teacher workshop brought to light several aspects of our education systems that we can change to guide the next generation in dealing with the climate crisis.
Empathy is one of the critical skills school-age children need to face the climate challenge.
Other critical skills, as elaborated in the Young Innovators methodologies and faculty discussions, include ecosystem thinking, activism, personal and community well-being, collaboration, geography, and environmental awareness. Teachers discussed various methodologies to expand classroom capabilities for the future generation of Linares leaders.

Students in the 10-hour session of the Young Climthon acquire the necessary skills to face climate change through the resolution of a local environmental challenge.
For this day, the organizers raised the challenge of improving the public spaces of Linares to make them more inclusive and sustainable.

The invitation was for young people to think about everyday places, like where they always take the bus, and make them more eco-friendly and community-oriented, in order to have a positive impact on climate change. Each student team chose the open public space in Linares to improve, devised a solution to pilot, and built a prototype to present to other teams. In a democratic election, the students judged the other solutions according to criteria including creativity, impact, and collaboration.

2811 at COP25

The solutions of this conference were presented at COP25 in Madrid, here is the video of the presentation: SEE HERE

The conference convened world leaders to discuss the rules of implementation of the Paris agreement, held at Cop21 in 2015. Yet the world’s powerful leaders failed to make any major decisions to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. His slow methods of discussion will not address the urgency of the global climate crisis.

The most powerful moments at the climate conferences were the demonstrations by indigenous activists and youth leaders like Greta Thunberg and the Fridays for a future march through Madrid with 500,000 people.

Climate Labs 2020

Starting in 2020, we will start working with universities on this subject, thanks to a European Union fund, Erasmus+. The project, led by the University of Caldas in Colombia and 12 regional and European universities (Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, Spain, France and Italy), with Ashoka as a non-academic expert partner, will strengthen applied research and innovation capacities for mitigation and adaptation to climate change in Latin America.

The project seeks to build interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder laboratories that apply new climate change research and innovations in the territories where the partners are based. Here note prepared by Reset.org.
